| Daniel: Well you broke
up a number of years ago, but recently (a couple ofweeksbeforethe gig
at lepakko) someone told me you were supose to ge backtogether, correct? If
so please tell me something about it, any new releases etc. |
| Nappi: Yes, We've talked about that. We've
plans to do a 7" or something in 2000. The Line-up will be little bit
different than at Lepakko (I can't say who are the guys in band in future,
me and Lateri anyhow). Let's see what happens. |
| Daniel: If the ruomors about you getting
back together is true, how´ll yousoundand what could we expect the lyricsto
be about? |
| Nappi: My absolute opinion is that sounds
must be something like PosiNega maybe little bit more power. Traditional
Riistetyt -sound is too soft for me. Lyrics will be political stuff. Lateri
haven't lost his attitude. |
| Daniel: Tell us about yourself. Who you
are and what you are up to and so on.When did you first get into punk/hc
and what interrested you? What keeps you involved? how about the other
members, what about them, why has´nt punk lost its evil grip around them? |
| Nappi: OK. My Name is Nappi and I have played
bass in several finnish punk/anarchy/hc/etc. groups. Also I have played
drums and guitar some bands, but they did anything outstandig things.
A Couple of year I have managed the CockRoach Comix, a onemans graphic/web
design management. Nowadays I also studying that. CRC have done some ep.
-covers, posters, web sites and multimedia. I got first into punk/hc in
1977 or 78 and I don't remember what was the reason why I interrested
in it. |
I was stoopid 12 years old kid from countryside.
Political thigs came about two years later when I formed my first band.
What keeps me involved? I think that it's the world around me. That's
the reason why I've always resist. The World is so full of hate, suffer
and other shit and all that keeps me going. About other members I can't
say much but I think that if you've been really in the scene, you'll be
somehow in there til' the end of your life. |
| Daniel: When you joined Riistetyt, had
you played in any other bands before?anyone we should know of?If so tell
me about it! |
| Nappi: I joined Riistetyt in summer of 1983.
Before that I was played in Kaaos about one year. When I was in Kaaos
we made our section to "Russian bombs Finland" and "Totaalinen Kaaos ep.".
In Riistetyt I played til' spring of 1984. We made two lps and one ep.
I left the band just before USA-tour (actually I'm very happy for that)
and we formed the Kuolleet Kukat with Jakke. KK worked about two years. |
Then came a 7 year period in many differend
bands, mostly shit, until 1993 we put the Kuolleet Kukat to work again.
KK split up in 1995, that was sad thing 'cos it was became very good anarchy-hc-punk
band. We did 4 eps and one CD. In 1996 Positive Negative was formed, but
about that later. |
| Daniel: Since you have
been involved in the scene such a long period what do uthink of todays
finnishhc/punk-scene compared to 82-83?What´s the bigest difference?It
seemslike the finn-scene (as the swedish) is getting bigger and bigger(im
talking about the diy punkscene....) true? |
| Nappi: About gigs: in 82-83 there were only
2-3 gigs/happening in year but happenings were really big. Everybody from
all over the country came to them. The Lepakko weekend (13.11.99) was
something like that. Nowadays the happenings are much more locally things
and there are gigs almost daily. Does the amount compensate the quality?
I don't know. |
The activity for demonstration is very high
in these days. I don't remember any demonstrations in 80's, only couple
of squattigs. Now are the zines better than ever and there are so much
of them. The scene is going bigger and bigger in all over the world. |
| Daniel: Wich are the
5 best punkbands ever, and wich are the 5 best bands youplayed with? AND
wich, do you think, was the best riistetyt gig/records ever? |
| Nappi: 5 best PUNKbands ever: Amebix, Discharge,
Disorder, Crass, Hellacopters 5 best bands I played with: Do you mean
that bands where I have played or Bands which have been in gigs with us? |
The best Riistetyt gig: I think it was the
gig with Killing Joke in Saarijärvi (the place in middle of nowhwere).
The best Riistetyt record: Skitsofrenia MLP |
| Daniel: You toured the
usa sometime during the 80´s i´ve heard , you must havebeen the firstscandinavian
punk band to do that, at least i think so, any memories totell? And even
if you were not in the band right then i guess you knowstoriesor? TELL
ME! |
| Nappi: I wasn't in the band in that tour
(thank god. I'm not religious.hehe). What I've heard about this tour does
not them credit. I heard that Riistetyt were so fuckin' assholes there
and rockstars of course. |
The guys who came after me to band were stupid
wankers already. They behaved very bad. This is what I've heard. What
is the truth.? |
| Daniel: My fav question,
who or wich are the biggest asshole you everencountered in the punkscene?
SHOCK ME! ;) |
| Nappi: I haven't thought about that. I really
can't answer this question. |
| Daniel: What do you
think of the lepakko gig recently in Helsinkki? It looked like alot of
old wankers from finland came ou tin the light for the first time in years
, the middle age in the backstage room was HIGH, at least compared toother
gigs ;) Age mixing is nice.. |
| Nappi: It was happening of the decade
/ century. I really mean that. There were so much people who I haven't
seen for years. The middle age in backstage was high 'cos the "old" band
played in saturday and "new" bands in friday. |
The "old" people have families and
other things and that is the reason why they are not in other gigs so
often. Some haven't anything to do with scene for years. |
| Daniel: Did you reherse
alot before the gig, i´m asking cos altough you sounded REALLY good, some
of the other bands sure as hell had´nt rehersedsince 1985 or something? |
| Nappi: We rehearsed about two times before
that gig. From previous rehearsals was about 16 years. |
| Daniel: You are (among with kaaos, rattus
and tervet kädet) among the mostinfluential bandsand most well known from
the OOH so large finish punk scene during theearly 80´s.Any feelings,
how does it feel to know that you´ve inspired and stillinspires loads
of ppl in bands etc, and(as i noticed in finnland) how does it feel when
you see 14 year oldkids with riistetyt on their studed leather jacket?
=) |
| Nappi: Of course it feels good. But
somehow it's little bit pity, 'cos these same things have been with kids
from 1982 and now it's almost 2000. OK. I must admit that we have use
these musical roots for all these years and mainly in recent years. If
we do that ourselves, why doesn't the other people do that. This was the
so called hard question. |
| Daniel: since you been involved in the
punk scene since the early 80´s you musthave seen alot of ppl geting into
and out of punk, why do you think ppl thats comited as fuck drops out after
a couple ofyears? |
| Nappi: I think that those people hadn't
any idealism from the first at all. They mainly thought that it's only
drinking and fun. Yes, it is that, but it's much more. |
Some people notice that couple of years
later and give up. What can I say about these people? They do their own
choice. |
| Daniel: What about
the political side of punk-culture, do you take an activepart in politics
today? What do you think about direct actions etc? Doyou think that it´ll
ever help change anything, have you or any othermember of the band done
any actions that can be classified as "directactions" ? |
| Nappi: I was eager communist and anarchist
earlier, but I noticed that there is someting wrong in communism and anarchism
works only in personal level. Nowadays I don't beleave any political movement.
I know what is right and what is wrong, that's enough for me. I have no
reason to take an activepart in politics nowadays, but if situation is
going to be so bad, we all must do something and I think that it may be
soon. |
The world is going worse day by day
and faschism / racism is rising. A Good example is what have happened
in Sweden recently. I'm sure that it'll be here soon. My "directactions"?
Not YET !!! Other members: Idon't know. |
| Daniel: What do you and the other band
members do today? |
| Nappi: I'm studying graphic design
/ multimedia / web nowadays. I'm going to finish my studies in December
2000. I'm also working with Cockroach Comix (I told about it earlier),I
play bass and make songs etc. Lateri works with electronics. |
Rike is director in television, he
makes comedy series. The other memberes; Piise is unbloyed but is doing
some kind of zine, Stydy is doing nothing (I mean that). About Raipe,
Perry, and Jaska I don't know nothing. |
| Daniel: You also play
in positive negative, wich seems to be "the rest home forold finnish punk
rockers" hehe, whats up with PN any new releases etctoexpect? any swe.
tour or any tours at all? |
| Nappi: Positive Negative split up couple
of moths ago. |
| Daniel: Why did´nt positive neg. play
at leppako, since janne, you, jakke etcallready were at the gig? |
| Nappi: Previous answer. |
| Daniel: Since you play in PN i guess
you have´nt lost touch with the punkscene,so which finnish band would
you recomend today? |
| Nappi: A couple of bands: Absurd Attitude,
Unkind, Diaspora. |
| Daniel: Do you got any swedish fav bands,
wich and why? |
| Nappi: Counterblast, it's number one. It's
little bit like Amebix.. Wolfback and Masslakt are my favorits too. And
don't forget Hellacopters. |
| Daniel: any fav. zines , haveyou ever
done a zine yourself? |
| Nappi: I don't read zines so much (reason
must be internet) but I'm a subscriber to Toinen Vaihtoehto, you know
that biggest zine of Finland. I was the editor-in-chief in zine called
AKY'zine in 1993-95. |
It was some kind of subculture publication.
I had to finish that thing 'cos I had no time to do anything else. In
future I'm going to set up some kind of Internet 'zine. Let's see what
happens. |
| Daniel: What do you
think about labels like Epitaph, Century Media, Lost &Found, Earache,
Nuclear Blast etc., and the bands that sign to them? Do you feel that
the punk scene lets bands of too easy when they sign?Explain. |
| Nappi: I don't think nothing about labels
like that, most of the bands are crab. These labels are so called bright
side of punk. |
Big audience thinks that this is punk, but
they don't know that the real scene is somethig else. |
